After the resounding success of last year’s festival, the traditional celebration of Biska Jatra is set to return to Bothell this spring. Hosted by Thimi Seattle Pucha, the event will take place on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the Bothell Rental Hall, bringing the spirit and traditions of Thimi Bhaktapur’s famed festival to the heart of the Pacific Northwest.
Biska Jatra, traditionally celebrated in mid-April is one of the most vibrant and historically rich festivals of Nepal, especially among the Newah community in Bhaktapur and surrounding towns. Known for its energetic chariot processions, ritualistic tug-of-war contests, and powerful drumming traditions, the festival spans several days in Nepal and has gained recognition for its cultural and spiritual significance.
The Seattle-area celebration seeks to preserve and showcase these traditions in a meaningful and immersive way. One of the event’s main attractions will be the reenactment of the Khat Jatra, or chariot procession, accompanied by the powerful sounds of Dhimay baja, traditional double-headed drums that are central to Newah celebrations. Organizers are recreating this symbolic procession to give attendees a glimpse of the festival’s dynamic energy and communal spirit.
In addition to the procession, the event will feature a traditional Newah feast, known as bhoye, served in a customary setting that reflects the hospitality and cultural richness of the Newah people. Guests will be invited to sit in rows and enjoy an array of dishes that reflect the culinary heritage of Nepal’s Kathmandu Valley.
Beyond the performances and the food, the celebration also serves as a community-building initiative, offering a platform for cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of Nepal’s living heritage. Organizers say the event is designed not only for those with Nepali roots but for anyone interested in experiencing the rhythms, tastes, and stories of a centuries-old tradition.
